SETUP

- Line Players up at all 4 hash marks (or goal line) with pucks

- Goalies should be in both nets

- Coaches should be moving throughout the progressions to force decisions

- Have both F's and D take reps on offense and defense in Progression #3

Progression #1 - Simple J Drill with Decision Forced by Coach

  • The first player in line skates down the ice and circles below the far blue line to receive a pass
  • The player next in line at the far end of the ice makes the pass
  • A coach should provide pressure as the player is catching the pass (or shortly after) to force the player to decide which way to head up ice
  • Make sure your players call for every pass
  • Make sure that the player shoulder checks to see where pressure is before receiving the pass
  • After receiving the pass, the player heads down to the ice to take a shot

Progression #2 - Passer Joins the Rush

  • The first player in line skates down the ice and circles below the far blue line to receive a pass
  • Player should call for the pass and shoulder check to look for pressure
  • The player who makes the pass can join him/her in a rush down the ice
  • The player who receives the puck should drive the wall
  • A coach should provide pressure upon zone entry to force the first player to create time for the second player to enter the zone
  • The puck carrier should cutback towards the wall to create time and make a pass to the passer who is joining the rush

Progression #3 - 2 on 1 Player w/o the Puck Makes the Call

  • The first player in line skates down the ice and circles below the far blue line to receive a pass
  • Player should call for the pass and shoulder check to look for pressure
  • The player who makes the pass can join him/her in a rush down the ice
  • The 3rd player in line should head up ice and gap up to meet the opposing players for a 2 on 1 heading back
  • The defenseman should focus on a tight gap (1.5 to 2 stick lengths away) and stay in the middle as much as they can
  • The player without the puck should be making the call to dictate the 2 on 1
  • Player without the puck should present their stick and show a good target for the puck carrier
