This is a drill for defense to work on retrieving loose pucks going back towards your own net. The goal is to:

  • retrieve the puck quickly by using your feet to retrieve the puck
  • once you have possession then get your shoulders and eyes facing up ice as quickly as possible
  • pull the puck laterally with one big move
  • make a strong pass up the ice on your forehand

The drill works as follows:

  • the first player starts at the blue line and throws a puck towards the redline, just enough to simulate a loose puck in the neutral zone
  • the player explodes to the puck to retrieve it and pivots to face up ice as quickly as possible
  • at the same time thy pull the puck to the outside and start heading up ice
  • then they make a hard pass to the next player in line
