Goalie Drills

This hockey drill is all about quick shots while moving in the slot area.  It is a good idea to have left handed shots in one end and right handed shots on the other end so you only have to have one passer in each end.  If you are on half ice then both passers can be in one end. Set up the drill as shown with four cones in the slot area (as shown).  If the player is left handed then the pass will be on the left side of the net so they are always in a good one-timer position.  The line of players should be just outside the blue line.

This is a great hockey drill for goalies to work on recovering after rebounds.  Place two pucks off to the side of the net and a line of players in the high slot.  The players in the high slot have pucks as well.  The first player in line shoots to score and then regardless of where the rebound goes they skate to one of the pucks at the side of the net and treat that puck as the rebound.  After the player shoots their rebound shot they need to replace the puck for the next player.

This ice hockey goalie drill should make your goalies look like a "brick wall" because no pucks should end up in the net.  The primary focus is angles and rebounds.  Set up two lines of players just outside the blue lines just inside the face off dots as shown in the diagram.  The players alternate sides to give goalies work on each side.  The players simply carry a puck down to just inside the top of the circles and shoot then follow their shot for a possible rebound.  All of the shots should come from the area highlighted in red.

This hockey drill is a half ice drill and typically used for a drill early in practice or a pre-game warm up. It is exactly like the previous Quick Touch drill but now it is a 2 on 0 instead of a 1 on 0.   Designate two players to start out as the "passers" and place them in the high slot about 15 - 20 feet apart (as shown).  The remaining players line up along the boards on the blue line on each side with pucks.  To start the drill the first player makes a pass to the opposite passer. The two passers make as many passes between each other as they can.

This half ice warm up drill gives the goalies three type of shots and angles, and the players also get to work on 3 types of shots. P1 starts the drill by coming out of the corner with a puck around the tire and shooting from below the face off circle.  After the shot P1 stays in front of the net and P2 starts their portion of the drill.  P2 must keep their feet moving and skate out around the tire.  Their goal is to get a shot off as quickly as possible while moving their feet and driving to the net. Try to teach players to keep shots low and shoot for rebounds.

A simple half ice shooting drill that works well for a half ice warm up. This is a variation of the 3 Level 1 on 0 drill. Divide the players into the two corners with pucks.  This time the first two players from both corners go at the same time.  The player with the puck goes around the corner and passes to the other player who is also skating around the cone and going to the net.  The puck carrier may shoot every once in a while to keep the goalies honest if the goalies start to play the pass too much.

A simple half ice shooting drill that works well for a half ice warm up.  It is a drill that works fine for squirts and up. Divide the players into the two corners with pucks.  Three players from each corner go at the same time.  The first player carries the puck around the first cone and takes a shot from close range, the second player goes around the second cone and takes a shot,  and the third player goes around the third cone and shoots.  This is as much a warm up drill for the goalies as well as the players so make  sure players are hitting the net.

This is a goalie drill that is fun for all players involved. At the start of the drill the coach assigns each player a number. The goalie does not know what numbers have been assigned to the players. Each player then takes a puck and stickhandles below the goal line. The players are all moving around below the goal line until the coach calls out a number. The player whose number is called attacks the net from behind the goal line. The challenge for the goalie is to find the player who is attacking the net and get in position as quickly as possible.

This is a goalie drill that requires a minumum of two players.  Place a pile of pucks just inside the face off dots in the high slot.  One of the players should start at about the face off dot.  Place a cone or tire at the bottom of the face off circle. To start the drill the coach passes a puck to the player.  When the player receives the puck they skate around the cone.  The player then has three options.

Here is a drill for goalies that focuses on reaction time and positioning.  A coach sets up with a pile of pucks in the slot area. Two tires are placed directly in front of the goalie.  Two players are off to the side of the tires to bang home the rebounds as they bounce out of the tires.  The shooter also has the option to shoot over the tires so the goalies hav eto be ready for that as well.  

This drill provides a lot of shots and a lot of side to side action for goalies. It needs to be performed at a quick pace for about a minute followed by a short rest for the goalies. To set up, place the pucks in two piles just inside the offensive zone face off dots.  Place one line near each pile of pucks.  The lines should start at the pile of pucks and go to the inside as shown.  The goal for the players is to move their feet the entire time and make a good one-time shot off the pass. 

This drill is a lot of fun for shooters and a challenging one for goalies. The pace of this drill should be as quick as the skill level of your players allows. Ideally all passes are one time passes to get the goalie moving side to side quickly. The excitement of this drill comes from the fact that any of the forward can shoot at any time, the puck does not necessarily need to make its way back to the player that started the drill.

This is another good goalie drill that gives goalies a chance to work on their angles and footwork. Select a few forwards to come work with the goalies before or after practice and take lots of reps in this drill. This is actually a good conditioning drill for goalies as well because of the side to side movement. Challenge the shooters to hit the net every time and use one-timers to make it more challenging on the goalies.

In this drill, players pass the puck as much as they want. They will try to score when they think the goalie is out of position. The forwards are allowed to shoot or come out from behind the net to try and score. The goalies need to work on their footwork and try to be in position to take on the shot at any time. The goalies should also try to use their stick to block passing lanes to their advantage. Thanks to Paul Todd in England for supplying this drill!

This ice hockey drill is great for forwards and goalies. The forward in the corner starts with the puck and skates inside the goal line. He has three options: 1. Keep the puck and try to stuff it, 2. Keep the puck and when pass back across the slot to the forward who is timing his break to receive the pass in a position to one-time the puck, 3. Fake the wrap around and pass the puck back to the forward before getting to the other side of the net.

This is a drill that focuses on quickness after the shot. The first shot should be aimed at the far lower corner. The goalie tries to get deflect the initial shot into the far corner. After the save is made, the goalie scrambles to the far post to take on another shot from the player near the post. This player should wait until the goalie has a chance to make the save. Switch sides each time and have the goalie do 4-5 reps before resting.

This drill is great for goalies and fun for forwards. It requires goalies to start facing the coach who is located in the slot. The coach can pass to either player coming out of the corner. The players have to stay within a stick's length of the goal line. Typically there will be one pass with a one time shot, but if players catch the goalie cheating can try to shoot short side, or sometimes players can make 2 passes to really challenge the goalie. Make sure the goalie has time to set up between reps and limit the reps to an amount where the goalie stays fresh.

This is a simple drill but a great workout for goalies. I would recommend doing several sets with 5 repetitions so the keeper stays fresh. The forwards receive a pass out of the corner from another player or coach and have two options. They can either shoot or pass. Only one pass is allowed between the forwards. The goalie get set as quickly as possible after each shot and the player passing from the corner needs to wait until the goalie is set.

This ice hockey drill is geared towards goalies, however, it is good for defense and forwards as well.  The defense make one pass to their partner, who one-times a shot low and on net to give the forward in front a chance for a tip.  The goalies job is to put the rebound in the corner.  Assuming the goalie steers the rebound into the corner, the forward in front of the net grabs a puck from the pile of pucks to the side of the net and takes another shot as though it wa

This is a conditioning drill for goalies. The emphasis on this drill is the quickness in which the goalie can get to the puck and clear it. This situation happens so many times in games and it is crucial that goalies have confidence to go get the puck and be aggressive. Of course in games the goalie can have no hesitation. When clearing the puck, set up a target that you would like them to pass the puck to such as the red line or far blue line.

This ice hockey drill focuses on the goalies ability to read the play as it develops from behind the net. The coach or player has the pucks behind the net. There are two lines of forwards on each side of the net on the goal line. The coach passes to either player. When the player receives the puck, they attack the net. The forward then has two options. If the foward from the opposite line joins the play, then the pass can go across to that player as well. If not the player keeps the puck and tries to score.

This is not only a great drill for goalies, but also for forwards because they can work on scoring off the rebounds.  Seven players are not necessarily required for this drill, it works fine with more or less.  Designate 1 player to be a shooter and stand in the slot with a pile of pucks.  The shooter shoots at the goalies pads to try and produce a rebound.  The first player to get to the rebound gets the reward of trying to score the goal.

This ice hockey drill is a good warm up drill for players and goalies. One player in the corner passes to a player of their choice. The player who receives the pass passes to any other player except for a player right next to them. Quick passes and quick shots are the goal in this drill. After five reps switch it up so a new player is making the passes and either switch goalies or give the goalie a little breather.
