Free Ice Hockey Drills

This drill focuses on defenssive zone coverage and backchecking. The drill starts with a 1 on 1 battle in front of the net ( F1 vs.

This ice hockey drill is great for defensemen to work on their shots, passing, and pivoting. Each player will get three shots. To start, the defensemen receives a puck from the corner and gains the center of the ice as quickly as possible and shoots from the top of the slot. The player continues around the cones always facing the net. This forces them to pivot and receive the next pass going backwards. When they receive the next pass the player repeats as in the first rep.

This drill is great for goalies and fun for forwards. It requires goalies to start facing the coach who is located in the slot. The coach can pass to either player coming out of the corner. The players have to stay within a stick's length of the goal line. Typically there will be one pass with a one time shot, but if players catch the goalie cheating can try to shoot short side, or sometimes players can make 2 passes to really challenge the goalie.

As simple as this ice hockey drill looks in the animation, it is very challenging to do the correct way.  Challenge your players to do the following: Keep their feet moving the entire time, sell the move to the outside and use the toe of the stick to pull the puck to their forehand as they accelerate to the center of the ice, and be sure to follow their shot for a rebound.

The focus of this drill is to develop good habits when going to the net and backchecking.  The forwards need to focus on moving their feet, skating hard to the net, and stopping at the net.  The drill starts on the whistle.  D1 skates up to the red line and pivots backwards.  F1 & F2 wait till D1 hits the red line then swing out along the blue line and then face up the ice to receive a pass from the coach.  The coach will make a pass to either F1 or F2.  F3 is the ba

This drill is greared towards forwards and goalies. It is a simple drill that focuses on one of the more important skills that all goal scorers seem to have, a quick catch and release. The forward start close to the coach in the middle of the ice and skates as fast as they can around the cone. The coach give the player a pass as they are going around the cone. The player is to catch the pass and release the shot in one motion. NO STICKHANDLING! Once the shot is taken then the next forward from the other line goes.

This drill focuses on footwork, puck control, and passing.  D1 starts the drill by passing to D2 and skating through the cones.  As D1 skates through the cones they have to always face D2.  D2 side steps their way down the blue line and performs as many give and go passes with D1 as possible.  After the last cone, D1 passes to D2, gets the puck back and goes in for a shot on net.  the two players then go to the opposite lines.

This ice hockey drill is also a great Warm-Up drill. Again the key is to get players feet moving while receiving and releasing a shot as quick as possible. An interesting variety to this drill is to give the player bad passes on purpose to make them adjust and get off a shot.

Start this drill with a line on the face off dot and one against the boards.  The two players pass the puck until they reach the blue line.  At the blue line the inside player gives the puck to the outside player and breaks to the inside expecting a pass from the outside player from the opposite corner.  Once they receive the pass they bring the puck into the zone wide and allow the other player to get into good scoring position in the slot.  Timing is key to this drill.

This drill starts when the forward passes to the defense at the blue line. The defense walks the puck to the middle of the ice and shoots. The forward then takes of and receives a pass from the opposite corner and attacks the defense on a full ice 1 on 1. Encourage forwards to keep their feet moving and have the defense strive to stand up and make the play at the Blue Line.
