2 on 2

This hockey drill is a full ice 2 on 1 situation in which you can add a backchecker to increase the urgency of the offensive players.  It may be a good idea to start without a backchecker and teach the forwards and defense how you want them to play the 2 on 1.  To set up the drill place the coach in the middle of the ice just inside the blue line with the pucks.  Two lines of forwards should set up at about the bottom of the center ice circle facing the coach (as shown in the diagram).

This drill is very similar to the 2 on 1 Backchecker Drill. The difference is that the defense start about 5 feet inside the blue line going backwards.  For the defense it simulates a situation where they get beat in the neutral zone and they have to transition forwards and sprint to the near post to break up the play. Try to get them to tranistion by opening up their hips right into a forward stride instead of crossing over.

This is 2 on 2 game played in tight quarters.  It is actually a great game for working on defensive coverage in front of your own net.  The only rules are that players must stay within the boundaries which are approximately shown in the diagrams and there must be at least one pass made between teamates before scoring. The puck is in play until the puck exits the boundary or is in the net.  Both teams are trying to score.

This ice hockey drill is an extension of the tip drill.  Once the shot is taken from the point and teh rebound is either put away or cleared out, the forwards position themselves to receive a pass from corner.  They receive a pass from the corner and attack the two defense 2 on 2.  The defense need to work on their gap control.  They should be standing up at the blue line forcing the forwards to make a play.

This drill is supposed to challenge defense by exagerating their gap. By exagerating their gap in drills like this, they should become more comfortable in game situations.  The drill starts when the two defense receive a pass at the blue line. The puck needs to be passed to the defense in the middle of the ice for a shot. The forwards can go once the shot is taken.

This drill focuses on defenssive zone coverage and backchecking. The drill starts with a 1 on 1 battle in front of the net ( F1 vs.

This 2 on 2 drill for both defense and forwards.  Set up players as shown in the diagram.  Either the forwards or defense start on their knees to give them a slight disadvantage. Whomever you think needs to be challenged more should start on their knees. To start the drill, the players are facing the boards (in some cases they will be on their knees).

This drill starts as a 1 on 1 down low and progresses into a 3 on 3 down low.  The goal is for the forwards to maintain puck posession until after the third whistle.  Only after the third whistle can the forwards shoot.  On the first whistle the coach dumps the puck into the corner where F1 has the advantage to retreive the puck first.  F1 protects the puck against D1 until the second whistle.
